Medicare Basics for Seniors
As you approach or pass age 65, Medicare becomes a key part of both your health care and your finances. Understanding the basics can help you get the coverage you need and avoid costly gaps.
What Is Medicare?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program mainly for people age 65 and older. It helps pay for hospital stays, doctor visits, preventive care, and prescription drugs, depending on the coverage you choose.
• Most people qualify at age 65.
• Some people under 65 qualify due to disability or certain conditions.
• Enrolling on time can help you avoid late penalties.
Part A – Hospital Insurance
Helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care after a hospital stay, some home health care, and hospice care. Many people pay no monthly premium for Part A if they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes long enough.
Part B – Medical Insurance
Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient services, tests, and many preventive services. Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B.
Part C – Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Most combine Parts A and B, often include drug coverage, and may add extras like dental, vision, or hearing benefits. You generally use doctors in the plan’s network.
Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage
Helps pay for prescription medications. You can get Part D through a stand‑alone drug plan or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan.
Filling the Gaps
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover everything. Many seniors add:
• A Part D plan to help with prescriptions.
• A Medigap (supplement) plan to help with deductibles and co‑pays.
• Or they choose a Medicare Advantage plan that bundles coverage.

Next Step
Choosing the right Medicare path depends on your health, prescriptions, doctors, and budget. If you are nearing 65 or already on Medicare, consider reviewing your options with an advisor at Keystone Senior Benefits, they are very knowledgeable professionals so you can feel confident about your coverage and costs in retirement.
